Fair Districts Louisiana is proud to partner with the Power Coalition for Equity and Justice and Louisiana Progress to offer the Louisiana Legislature 2019 Redistricting Pledge to all legislative candidates in this fall’s election.
We will start publishing a running list of signatories in early September.
Text of the pledge:
Drawing fair and equitable electoral districts at the local, state, and federal level is crucial to the proper functioning of our democracy. Fair and equitable districts also greatly improve the public’s trust in government. Candidates who are elected to the Louisiana Legislature this year will be charged with this important task in 2021, using information gathered during the 2020 census. This pledge is intended to help the public understand each candidate’s views on redistricting and make more informed voting decisions.
I, _________________________, pledge to:
Work to draw districts that are fair and equitable, without regard to incumbency, political affiliation, or race.
Work to draw districts that give voters a greater voice in our democracy by ensuring a competitive electoral environment.
Work to ensure a transparent redistricting process.
Work to educate the public about the redistricting process, and reach out to my constituents so we can incorporate their feedback into the redistricting process.
End prison gerrymandering (the practice of counting incarcerated people where they are held in prison, not where they lived when arrested)
Institute a mandatory waiting/review period of at least three (3) days between when the new maps are finalized in the Legislature’s conference committee and when they go up for a final vote.
Support the establishment of a redistricting study and advisory commission.
